The Indian Open of Surfing 2017 – 2nd Surfing Festival of Karnataka at Sasihithlu Beach (Mangaluru)

Are you surprised to hear about Surfing festival in India? Yes, that is true! Karnataka’s 2nd surfing festival known as “The Indian Open of Surfing 2017” is scheduled between May 26th to 28th at Sasihithlu beach. This surfing festival is organized and sanctioned by International Surfing Association and Surfing Federation of India and supported by Karnataka tourism, government of Karnataka. Before we share more information about this Surfing festival, let me briefly introduce this amazing state of India.

Karnataka is a state of unique architecture and has many attractive tourist places like Coorg, Jog Falls, Hampi etc.. The state has spiritual places, water sports beaches, hill stations and long coastal area with amazing beaches to explore. Now tourists and local people can enjoy water sports with one more beach festival event in Karnataka and that is “Indian Open of Surfing 2017” – an unique surfing festival.

Once again in May 2017, International surfers will attend the 2nd edition of the Indian Open of Surfing at Sasihithlu beach, which is located at just 30 km off the Magnaluru-Udupi stretch of the national highway. It will start from May 26 and will end on May 28 where all Surfing lovers can enjoy this exciting festival again in Mangaluru.

Lat year in May 2016, the first edition of “The Indian Open of Surfing” beach festival was  organized by Karnataka Tourism, where the inaugural event was hosted at Sasihithlu. It received a very great response from tourist and hence, the organizers wishes to continue hosting this surfing competition this year in May 2017 again. The purpose of this water sports activity  is to promote the Karnataka beaches as a popular surfing and adventurous destinations.

In the very first edition, number of surfers from the various countries became the part of the festival. The State government and local people of villages gave a good support to this, who in turn earned a good amount of revenue during this surfing festival of India.

World Surf League will host the 2nd edition of “Indian Open of Surfing”, which will provide a good opportunity for local surfers to compete with international surfers. In addition to the best surfers and SUP Paddlers competing with each other, many more fun activities will be going on in this beach festival.

From various cities of the east and west coast of India, surfing and SUP athletes will be presented during this festival. A huge number of international athletes will also participate in this event. The National Titles will feature athletes from the various states like Karnataka, Goa, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry, Andhra Pradesh and athletes from foreign and should include at least surfers from the US, Sri Lanka, France, Madagascar and others countries.

Registration fees for the event:

Registration fees for Indian open of surfing event is different for different group as mentioned below:

  • Novice , for 14 and under – Never surfed in a surfing competition before, Surfed for 12 months or less
  • Surfing, for Groms – 16 and under
  • Surfing , for Juniors – 17 to 22 (Entry fees 500/- INR)
  • Surfing , for Seniors – 23 to 30 (Entry fees 500/- INR)
  • Surfing, for Masters – Above 30 (Entry fees 500/- INR)
  • Surfing, for Women of all age (Entry fees 500/- INR)
  • Surfing , for Open Category (Entry fees 2500/- INR)
  • SUP, for Men (Entry fees 2000/- INR)
  • SUP, for Women (Entry fees 2000/- INR)

The new attraction of the 2nd edition of Indian Open of Surfing is the inclusion of Novice 14 and under category. It is for the surfers, who are 14 years or younger at the start of the contest and have never surfed in a contest before. This is introduced by Surfing Federation of India, India’s National Governing Body of Surfing. It is for the youngsters who have only started surfing at their younger age.

Such a good decision is taken to help open up surfing and to give guidance to the youngsters in the growth and development in surfing, at a very younger age. From this action, youngsters will be motivated to the sport activities and will involve them to take a part in the event in a comfortable manner. It will provide them the idea of how the surfing in contest, can happen while the competition. It will also give training to be capable enough to compete at higher level in 2018 “Indian Open of Surfing” and the other surfing and adventure sports contests to be held across the India. This new addition of the event will give them a chance to meet new surfers from India and will help in the surf contests across the country.

The people, who want to spend their time during the contest, can visit Sasihithlu beach and have a look on different activities of the festival and this visually striking performance.
