Locally, Ka Khoh Ramhah is also known as Pillar Rock or Mothorp. The rock has a tall upside-down cone shape, which looks similar to a Shivling. Two smaller rocks with the same shape stand beside it, surrounded by the lush green hills of Cherrapunji. A small stream flows between these stones and during the rainy season, it turns into a pretty waterfall.
The Khasi people have an old story connected to this rock. It is said that a giant once lived here who created problems for the villagers. To stop him, the villagers mixed iron pieces and nails into his food. The giant died after eating it and left behind his large bamboo basket. Over time, this basket turned into stone, and today we see it as Ka Khoh Ramhah, or the “Giant’s Basket.”
The best time to explore Ka Khoh Ramhah is from October to April. During these months, the sky stays clear and the weather is comfortable for sightseeing and hiking. The rock and the surrounding hills look stunning, and photography is at its best.
If you visit in the monsoon months (June to September), you can see the seasonal waterfall near the rock. But heavy rain can make the paths slippery and visibility low. For the best experience, most tourists choose the dry season.
