If you are travelling to Cherrapunji, you must visit this place. We visited single living root bridge during May last year and it was great experience must say. Please note that, you will have to climb down almost 3500 steps to reach this place and come back through 3500 steps. It will definitely require good amount of efforts but it is worth. If possible, plan night stay at this place and visit double decker living root bridge which is one hour trek from this place.

The single-decker living root bridge in Cherrapunji (Sohra) is one of the most unique natural attractions of Meghalaya. These bridges have been built for centuries by the local people of the land (Khasis and the Jaintias). They have also been used by these people to cross the overflowing rivers during the monsoon season. Living root bridges are very special because they can last for hundreds of years under ideal conditions. Many of these bridges rise 50 to 100 feet above the ground and are strong enough to withstand heavy rains. The longest living root bridge in Meghalaya is believed to be 175 feet in length. There are approximately 100 or so known living root bridges across different villages. The most famous ones are found in Nongriat, Cherrapunji, Nongbareh, and nearby areas. These bridges are not just pathways but also cultural symbols that show the harmony between people and nature.

What is a living root bridge?

These are naturally built bridges, mainly built by first planting two rubber trees of the elastic palm on either side of a river. These trees take almost a decade to grow and produce secondary root systems. The roots are then carefully connected together to form strong structures. Over time, the roots grow larger and thicker, making the bridge even stronger.

Popular Living Root Bridges:

There are many beautiful living root bridges in Meghalaya. Some popular ones are found in Nongbareh, Padu, Sohra (Cherrapunji), Kudeng Rim, Kudeng Thymmai, and Dawki (Mawlynnong and Shnongpdeng). The ones in Sohra (Cherrapunji) are especially famous, including both the double-decker and single-decker bridges. These bridges are around 30 to 50 meters long.
