Cherrapunji (Sohra), Meghalaya, India

We all know Cherrapunji because it is famous for heavy rain falls in entire India and was also known as wettest place on earth. But it is also blessed with wonderful natural places and amazing waterfalls as well. Locally known as Sohra, it is a small town located at around 45Km from Shillong, a capital city of Meghalaya state. 

Cherrapunji is surrounded by east khasi hills with lush green dense forest and beautiful waterfalls and hence became the most popular tourist destination in north east region of India. 

You will be surprised to know that, Cherrapunji is the only place where you will find living root bridges. Yes, Khasi tribe who used to train roots of Ficus Elastica tree to grow over the stream of water which form a bridge like structure which was used by the locals to cross the rivers for centuries. 

Double decker living root bridge is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Cherrapunji attracts thousands of trekkers every year. 

Cherrapunji is a small village and hence, night life is not that much popular. If you really want to spend time in nature, you can plan stay in Sohra or you can book your hotel in Shillong and can plan day trip as well.
