Sabarmati Ashram (also known as Gandhi Ashram, Harijan Ashram, or Satyagraha Ashram) is located in the Sabarmati suburb of Ahmedabad. It was the home and workplace of Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the Indian independence movement, from 1917 to 1930. The ashram served as a base for Gandhi's various campaigns, including the famous Salt Satyagraha of 1930.
The ashram was founded on June 17, 1917. The ashram consisted of several buildings including Gandhi's residence, prayer hall, library, kitchen & various workshops. Gandhi lived at the ashram with his wife Kasturba. During his time at the ashram, Gandhi launched several movements that were instrumental in India's struggle for independence. These included the Non-Cooperation movement of 1920, the Salt Satyagraha of 1930 and the Quit India Movement of 1942.
