About Thiksey Monastery (Gompa)

Thiksey monastery which is also known as Thikse Gompa is a beautiful Buddhist gompa belonging to the Gelukpa order of Buddhism. Located at just 19km east from Leh city, it is easily accessible via Leh-Manari road. It is located between the icy deserts of Leh and Ladakh. Thiksey monastery, Ladakh's largest Tibetan monastery, contains several stupas, statues, and other Buddhist artifacts on its 12 storey structure. 

Due to the unique location and surrounding snow-capped mountains, thousands of tourists from all over the world visit. The presence of a serene environment, as well as the fusion of contemporary architecture and craftsmanship, add to the overall beauty. Thiksey Monastery is best visited between the months of May and October. The weather is pleasant, and the roads to Ladakh are open at that time.

By Air

Thiksey Monastery is easily accessible by car and bus. It is a simple day trip from Leh. Bus services are only frequent during the festival; otherwise, a single daily service departs at 9.00 a.m. and returns at 5:00 p.m.
