Alchi, Leh, Ladakh

Alchi is a small town located in Leh, Jammu & Kashmir. It is situated on the lowland. This place is popular for its oldest Alchi monastery. June to September is the best time to visit Alchi. Alchi Monastery or Alchi Gompa (monastery and temple complex) is located in Ladakh's Alchi Village, about 65 kilometres from Leh on the banks of the Indus River. Alchi is regarded as one of the most important Buddhist centres in Ladakh, as well as one of Ladakh's monastic jewels. Devotees from all over the world flock here in search of eternal peace.

The best time to visit Alchi Monastery is during Buddhist festivals such as Chotrul Duchen, Galdan Namchot, Losar (The Tibetan New Year), Monlam, and Sho Dun when there are many celebrations such as cultural shows, music, and dance. When the weather is nice, these festivals take place between May and September. Between the months of November and April, the roads to Alchi Monastery is closed due to heavy snowfall.
