Shah Jahan, the Mughal Emperor, erected this tomb for Mumtaz Mahal in the 17th century. The Taj Mahal took 21 years to build (from 1632 to 1652), with over 20,000 labourers labouring night and day. How to reach Taj Mahal
The Taj Mahal is located in Agra, which is approximately 200 kilometres south of Delhi. The nearest domestic airport is in Agra, 7 kilometres from the city centre. There are regular flights to Agra from locations such as Mumbai and Delhi.
Agra is well connected to the rest of the country by train. There are three railway stations connected with Agra:
- Agra Cantt: Major railway station
- Agra Fort is India's oldest railway station.
- Raja Ki Mandi
It roughly takes 4 hours to reach Agra from Delhi. Taxis and bus services are available from Delhi to Agra and vice versa. The sacred city of Mathura (the birthplace of Lord Krishna) is around 50 kilometres away.
