Tabo Village

Tabo village is located on the main route when you drive towards the Kaza village of Spiti Valley of Himachal Pradesh, India. It is well known for the ancient Tabo Monastery, meditation caves and clear night sky and can be best place for overnight stay as sometime Kaza is difficult to get the hotel or home stay.

Situated at the height of around 3,050 metres (10,010 feet) and on the banks of the Spiti River, Tabo is an important cultural, religious and archaeological destination in the cold desert region of the Himalayas.

Tabo is having limited attraction as mostly people prefer overnight stay or some rest in the village but still, you can explore few places like:

Tabo Monastery:
Founded in 996 CE, Tabo Monastery is more than 1,000 years old. It is often called the “Ajanta of the Himalayas” because of its priceless murals, stucco sculptures, ancient scriptures and traditional Buddhist artwork.

Tabo Caves:
The ancient caves located on the hillside above the village were once used by Buddhist monks for meditation. These caves also provided shelter during the harsh winter months where villagers stay during their travel from one village to another.

Apple Orchards:
Tabo has several green apple orchards that add colour to its otherwise dry mountain landscape. The best time to see fresh apples is between August and October.

Location:
Tabo is situated in a flat, bowl-shaped valley along National Highway 505. It is located around 40 km before Kaza if you are traveling from Reckong Peo through the Shimla–Kinnaur route.

Best Time to Visit:
The best time to visit Tabo is from May to October, when the weather is pleasant and most roads and high-altitude mountain passes remain open.

Stargazing:
Because of its high altitude, clear atmosphere and low light pollution, Tabo is an excellent destination for stargazing. On clear nights, visitors can enjoy beautiful views of the Milky Way and countless stars.
