The name Pahalgam comes from the Kashmiri words meaning "village of shepherds." For centuries, this area was used as seasonal eating grass grounds by Gujjar and Bakarwal nomadic communities who would bring their herds up from the plains during summer. The town developed as a trading and resting point along routes connecting different parts of Kashmir.
Pahalgam gained wider recognition during the 20th century when the Indian film industry began using the valley and its meadows as shooting locations. The Betaab Valley, in particular, got its name from the 1983 Hindi film Betaab, which was shot there. Over the decades, the area has appeared in numerous Bollywood films, which brought further tourist interest from across India.
The Amarnath Yatra, one of the most important Hindu pilgrimages in North India, uses Pahalgam as its traditional base camp. Pilgrims who choose the longer Pahalgam route begin their trek from Chandanwari. The Yatra typically takes place in July–August each year.

Temperatures remain between 10°C and 25°C. The meadows are green, the Lidder River is flowing well, and most tourist facilities are operating fully. This is the most popular season and accommodation can fill up quickly, so book in advance.
September to November offers a different experience. The tourist crowds become fewer, the forests begin to show yellow and orange autumn colors, and the air is very clear. Temperatures drop further as October and November progress, going down to around 5°C at night by late November.
December to February brings snowfall and very cold temperatures. Most roads to higher spots are blocked. July and August coincide with the Amarnath Yatra, which brings large numbers of pilgrims and can make accommodation very busy. The best time of day to visit major spots like Baisaran and Betaab Valley is in the morning, before day visitors arrive from Srinagar.
