Fatehpur Sikri was named "City of Victory" after Emperor Akbar established the site during the second half of the 16th century. The site occupied Agra District in Uttar Pradesh where Mughals ruled their capital for ten years. The town stands out with its majestic red sandstone structures including Jama Masjid palaces and royal courts which appear elegant through Indo-Islamic architecture.
During 1571 - 1573 Emperor Akbar built his masterwork in Fatehpur Sikri on top of the Vindhya mountain crags near an artificial reservoir. Akbar established this settlement to contain all necessary city components from palaces to mosques and markets to residence spaces. The short Mughal capital status of Fatehpur Sikri ended in 1585 when Akbar decided to relocate his court to Lahore while using the site for occasional royal stays.
