Bhartiya Lok Kala Mandal is a museum and cultural centre in Udaipur and a must-visit place to experience the culture of Rajasthan. It shows old and beautiful cultural activities like puppet shows, traditional clothes, musical instruments, and art from Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh. It helps people learn about India's village life and folk culture. It was founded by Padam Shri Late Devi Lal Samar in the year 1952. It is one of the most important centres in India that celebrates rural creativity, tribal culture, and creative heritage.
Bhartiya Lok Kala Mandal is more than just a museum – it’s a living proof of India’s rural heartbeat, where every puppet, painting, and costume tells a story of tradition and identity. Whether you're a solo traveller, a family on vacation, or a culture lover, this place will leave you mesmerised by the richness of Indian folk heritage. It is a must-visit for culture lovers, researchers, students, and tourists looking to explore the folk nature of India.
The museum has many handcrafted puppets – rope puppets (called Kathputli) from India and even water puppets from Vietnam and puppets from many other countries. Visitors can watch live puppet shows in the Govind Puppet Theatre, where artists perform famous folk stories like Ram Leela, Raas Leela, and Sinhasan Battisi using colourful dolls. Folk dance shows happen here every day. Dancers perform energetic styles like Terah Taal, Taal, Bhawai, and Gavari from the Bhil tribe and dances such as Garba, Dandiya, and Kalbeliya. You can also learn about these arts – there are workshops and training programmes where both children and adults can learn puppet making and folk dance from experienced teachers.
