Lake Pichola, an artificial freshwater lake, was created in 1362 AD by Maharana Lakha. Its primary purpose was to meet the water needs of the city and provide a serene backdrop to the palaces and temples that were built around its shores. Over the centuries, it has been expanded and improved by various rulers of the Mewar dynasty. One of the most famous landmarks on Lake Pichola is the Lake Palace (Jag Niwas), a magnificent marble structure that appear to float on the lake's clear waters. Built by Maharana Jagat Singh II in 1746, it is now a luxury hotel and a symbol of Udaipur's beauty. This palace was used as a refuge by Emperor Shah Jahan, the builder of the Taj Mahal, during a period of exile.
