If you are visiting Junagadh, don’t miss the famous and beautiful Adi-Kadi Vav, located near Girnar hill. This stepwell is one of the oldest and most unique structures in Gujarat. Unlike many other stepwells that are built with stone pillars and decorations, Adi-Kadi Vav is completely carved out of a single rock, showing the great skill and hard work of people from ancient times.
There are two famous stepwells—Adi-Kadi Vav and Navghan Kuvo. These wells are very different from others in Gujarat. Most stepwells are built using bricks or stones layer by layer, but Adi-Kadi Vav is he entire space of the well—including the walls and steps—has been cut out directly from the solid rock. This means the whole structure is made from one piece of stone, without any added construction.
Adi-Kadi Vav was built in the 15th century, during the time of the Chudasama dynasty, though some people think it might be even older. The stepwell has around 166 steps that go down to the water level, which is about 123 feet deep. The walls are made of natural rock, and there is a small window carved above the well. There are no fancy carvings or pillars here, but its simple design and natural look make it a very special and peaceful place to visit.
There is a well-known Gujarati saying about this place:
“Adi Kadi ni Vav ane Navghan Kuvo, je na juve te jivto muo.”
It means, “One who has not seen Adi-Kadi Vav and Navghan Kuvo is like living dead.” This shows how special these two places are for the people of Junagadh.
Adi-Kadi Vav has around 120 steps made from stone. These steps take you down to the base of the well. Walking down the steps feels like going back in time and seeing how people managed to store water long ago.
Adi Kadi Vav is open daily from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM. The last entry is around 4:00 PM and the site will close at 6:00 PM.
Adi-Kadi Vav is just 4 km from Junagadh city center and around 3 km from Junagadh railway station.
The best time to visit Adi-Kadi Vav is from October to February. The weather stays cool and comfortable during these months, making it easy to explore Girnar hill and nearby places like Uparkot Fort, Navghan Kuvo and Buddhist Caves during the same trip.
