History of Sun Temple Modhera

The Modhera Sun Temple was built in the early 11th century by King Bhima I of the Chalukya dynasty. This glorious temple is built to pay homage to the sun god in the village of Modhera in the Mehsana district which is situated on the banks of the River Pushpavati. The complex of the temple is divided into three main parts: Sabha Mandapa (the assembly hall) Gudha Mandapa (the sanctuary hall), and Kunda (the reservoir).

The architecture of Sun Temple Modhera

This temple is designed so that the first ray of sunlight falls on the idol of the Sun Lord, initially, the entire temple has pillars on a lotus-shaped structure and every inch of its walls shows avant-garde and detailed carvings. The glorious past of our life and culture from the time of Ramayana to the Mahabharata and the human life cycle to the Kamasutra is also in carved on its pillars. The temple campus consists of a rectangular water tank of Surya Kunda or Ram Kunda, a huge garden, Sabha Mandap, Sanctum Sanctorum, a Museum, etc.
