Sarahan Village

Sarahan is a scenic village located in the Shimla district of Himachal Pradesh, at an altitude of about 2,313 meters above sea level. It is about 162 km from Shimla, roughly a 5–6 hour drive, on the road that turns off at Jeori from the Hindustan-Tibet Highway. The village is best known as the location of the Bhimakali Temple, one of the 51 Shakti Peethas in India and the official state temple of Himachal Pradesh.

The village is surrounded by thick forests and terrace farms, with views of the snow-capped Shrikhand Mahadev peak on clear days. Sarahan is also part of the apple-growing belt that extends across the Shimla district into Kinnaur. The Sarahan Pheasantry, a conservation center run by the Himachal Pradesh Forest Department, is located here and is home to rare pheasant species including the Western Tragopan, the state bird of Himachal Pradesh.

History and Background of Sarahan Village:

Sarahan has historically served as the seat of the Bushahr royal family's summer court. The Bhimakali Temple at its center is believed to be one of the oldest Shakti temples in the Himalayan region, with origins going back over 800 years. The temple served as the royal deity of the Bushahr kings, and royal patronage helped it develop the distinctive blend of Tibetan and Himachali temple architecture seen today.

After independence and the integration of hill states into Himachal Pradesh, Sarahan continued as an important religious and cultural center. Today, the Sarahan Pheasantry, established by the Forest Department, has helped protect and breed several endangered Himalayan pheasant species including the Western Tragopan.

The best time to visit Sarahan is from April to June and from September to November. In spring and early summer, the weather is pleasant and the views of snow-capped peaks are clear. September to November is apple harvest season, which adds special charm to the visit.

Winter (December to February) can see snowfall and the road from Jeori to Sarahan can become icy or blocked. July and August bring frequent rainfall.
