Dholavira is an ancient city in Kutch, India. UNESCO added it to the World Heritage Sites list in 2021. The city is surrounded by the Great Rann of Kutch and offers a unique environment. It has well-planned streets, reservoirs, and an impressive citadel. Dholavira showcases the pioneering Harappan mind with its early and well-planned water conservation system. The artifacts and structures at the site provide valuable insights into the ancient Indus Valley Civilization. If you're interested in heritage tourism, Dholavira is a great place to visit.
Dholavira is located at Khadirbet in Bhachau Taluka of Kutch District, Gujarat, and lies on the Tropic of Cancer. It is one of the five largest Harappan sites and the most prominent archaeological sites in India belonging to the Indus Valley Civilization. It is also considered the grandest city of its time. The site was discovered in 1967-68 by J. P. Joshi of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and has been under excavation since 1990. The ASI opined that Dholavira has added new dimensions to the understanding of the Indus Valley Civilization. Other major Harappan sites discovered so far include Harappa, Mohenjo Daro, Ganeriwala, Rakhigarhi, Kalibangan, Rupnagar, and Lothal.
