How to reach

Most of the trek organizers offers pickup and drop from Kathgodam as it is almost 12 hours of journey from Kathgodam to Lohajung (base camp). Here you will need to report at Kathgodam which is well connected by bus and train routes from Delhi, Lucknow and Dehradun. Journey from Delhi through train costs around Rs. 180 and Rs 450 for second & third AC sleeper classes respectively.

Reach Kathgodam by Train:

From Delhi:

  • Delhi to Kathgodam Shatabdi Express (12040) - Depart from NSDL at 6AM and reach Kathgodam by 11AM.
  • Ranikhet Express (5014) departs Delhi at 10:40 PM and arrives Kathgodam at 5:30 A.M.
  • Uttar sampark kranti (5035) departs Delhi at 4:00 PM and arrives Kathgodam at 10:40 P.M.

From Dehardun:

  • Doon Express (4120) departs Dehradun at 10:30 PM and arrives Kathgodam at 7:10 A.M.

Reach Kathgodam By Bus:

Government buses start from ISBT Delhi Anand Vihar station. Haldwani happens to be a twin town of Kothagodham and is a stop in the Delhi-Nainital route. The bus journey is ~ 8 Hrs and the Kathgodham Railway station is 4 kms from Haldwani bus stand. It is recommended to stick to Government buses run by State Tourism as the private operators are not very safe and trust worthy.

Day 1: Kathgodam to Lohajung


Altitude - 7660 Feet.

Overnight Stay - Guesthouse at Lohajung.

Travel - 210 Kms Drive in 10 Hrs.

Other Activities/ Information - Shopping in the Local market.

The first day of the trek begins with picking up at Kathgodam railway station early in the morning. An overnight train from Delhi is quite convenient and opted by majority of the travelers.

The journey from Kathgodam to Lohajung is a treacherous 10 Hour drive through Himalayan mountains. The first few hours will witness scenic road trip alongside the river Kosi. The journey passes through some of the famous tourist spots of Uttarakhand. Bheemtal, Almora and Kausani are some of the popular hill stations on our way as we enter Lohajung where we are welcomed by breathtaking view of Nanda Ghunti peak. If all goes as per schedule, we will be reaching the guest house in Lohajung around 5:00 P.M., the perfect time for tea perhaps! The overnight stay will be in this guest house and in case you forgot to carry some winter wears or trekking gear (or even if you did not!) the local market at walking distance might come to your rescue.

Day 2: Lohajung to Bekaltal


Altitude - 9690 Feet.

Overnight Stay - Tent at Bekaltal.

Travel - 4-5 Hrs trek covering 6 kms.

Other Activities/ Information - Natural Springs and manmade.

The action commences from the guest house at Lohajung and the day will see a trek of around 6 kms covered in the span of 4 to 5 hours. The trek is through thick forest before reaching the small village of Mandoli which happens to be the first break for the day. You can catch your breath, enjoy the scenic beauty and fill your water bottles here before continuing for the curvy hike that lies ahead. 

After climbing for a while, we will be entering the Kali valley which happens to be the confluent point of two regional rivers of Kali and Pindari. The valley promises a mesmerizing view of green covers surrounded by snowy hills. As we continue the trek we will be passing a few muddy huts scattered in the vicinity. If you are trekking in the months of February and March, you will encounter rhododendron groves in different hues of red color, otherwise it is just a snowy terrain in shades of white and grey when the winter is at its peak.

Crossing the Kali valley, the trek will continue to reach a couple of streams which serves as a source of potable warm water till we reach Begum; a rest point known for breathtaking view overlooking the forests in the valley. The destination for the day is Bekaltal which is roughly an hour's trek from here. The Bekaltal lake welcomes either with calming waters or partially frozen avatar depending on whether you come here in summer or winters. The overnight camp will be alongside the lake in the midst of thick oak forests.

Day 3: Bekaltal to Brahmatal


Altitude - 10450 feet.

Overnight Stay - Tent near Brahmatal lake.

Travel - 7 Km trekking in 7 Hrs.

Other Activities/ Information - Scenic beauties of Shivalik and greater Himalayas throughout the trail

This day's trek will be through thick oaks and rhododendrons at quiet high slopes for a few hours before reaching a plateau of Telandi. The area will be either in the form of green vegetation or dense snowfield depending on whether its summer or winter time and the terrain is bound to be a thrilling experience in both ways.

The meadow continues till around 11500 feet which happens to be the highest point of the trek before starting to gradually decrease from there. Walking down the slopes, we will cross a small temple before converging to Brahmatal lake situated half a kilometer from the temple. The picturesque path will cross the valleys of Almora and Nainital while the peaks of Mount Trishul and Mount Nanda Ghunti can be seen from a distance. The overnight camp will be a couple of hundred meters away from the beautiful lake where you can enjoy the serenity you just earned. Trekkers are advised to carry around 2 to 3 liters of water today as the trail does not cover any source of water. 

Day 4: Brahmatal to Tilbundi


Altitude - 12200 feet.

Overnight Stay - Tent at Tilbundi.

Travel - 7 Km covered in 8 hours.

Other Activities/ Information - 360 degree view of Himalayan peaks. No water points.

Brace yourself and start the day early in the morning as the trek for the day is mostly comprised of uphill climbs. The zigzag ascent through the beautiful Oak and Rhododendron trees takes you to Brahmatal Lake which is a splendid view and the sun's rays falling on the lake makes it a picture perfect moment. The trail is quite curvy and zigzag in shape and each ascent will give you the illusion that this is perhaps the last ascent only to be disappointed once you reach there.

It can be tiring and frustrating walk while you are at it but as soon as you reach the top, you are greeted with breathtaking view of Mt Nanda Ghunti and Mt Trishul and must take a few pictures to cherish this experience of a lifetime. You can relax now as it is all downhill from here! Quite literally. On your way down you will notice that the trail is quite different from the one you climbed up giving you a nice 360 degree view of the entire Himalayan range and some of its peaks like Mandi, Trishul, Nilgiri to mention a few. After an hour of descent, you will reach the overnight campsite at Tilbundi which is a flat terrain surrounded by trees on all sides.

Day 5: Tilbundi to Lohajung


Altitude - 8000 Feet.

Overnight Stay - Guest House at Lohajung.

Travel - 4 Km trek in 6 Hours and 1 Hr drive to Lohajung.

Other Activities/ Information - Walking stick will be quite helpful. Gradual descent.

The last leg of the trek will take you through thick Oak trees to the village of Wan. The picturesque trail will provide plenty of opportunities to capture the scenic beauty all around. A water source at Chota Tilbundi will give you a short break to refill your bottles and the Wan village is just at a distance of an hour from here. Journey from here to Lohajung will be covered by road and vehicles should be ready by the time you arrive at the meeting point.

Day 6: Lohajung to Kathgodam

Overnight Stay -

Travel - 10 Hrs drive to cover 210 Kms.

The final day of the adventure will be devoted to reaching back to Kathgodam from Lohajung in a 10 hr long journey. The journey commences right after morning tea as breakfast and lunch will be made available on the way and we must be approaching Kathgodam by 6:00 pm with a short stopover at Kausani for souvenir shopping.
