About Surkanda Devi Temple, Dhanaulti, Uttarakhand

Surkanda Devi Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to the goddess Sati (the wife of lord Shiva, before she took birth as Goddess Parvati). This temple is located on the top of hill (Around 9,042 ft above sea level) near Dhanaulti hill station (around 7 km) and Chamba (22 km) in Tehri district of Uttarakhand, India. The temple provides very beautiful 360 degree view of Garhwal region. In the north, snow capped mountains of Himalayas can be seen (on a clear day). On the other side, you will see Rishikesh and Dehradun valley. A variety of beautiful flowers and herbs grow in large numbers here. You can also see very beautiful birds of the western Himalayas in this region.

The temple is believed to be one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, the sacred places where parts of Goddess Sati's body fell after Lord Vishnu used his Sudarshana Chakra to stop Lord Shiva, who was deeply saddened and walking from place to place. It is said that Sati's head fell at this very spot, making it one of the most important religious temples in all of North India.

History of Surkanda Devi Temple:

The legend goes back to the ancient story of Sati's self-sacrifice by fire at her father Daksha's yajna. When Shiva carried her lifeless body across the universe, Vishnu stepped in and wherever a part of Sati fell, a Shakti Peetha was born. Surkanda Devi marks the spot of her "sur" (head), which is exactly how this peak got its name.

The temple's exact time isn't clearly documented, but it has been a place of worship for centuries. Local Garhwali communities have deep respect for this goddess, and the faith here feels old, the kind that mountains carry quietly.

What You Can See From The Temple:

Standing at the temple, you get a 360-degree wide view of the Garhwal region. On a clear day, the snow-capped mountains of the Himalayas shine in the north - Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Bandarpoonch - as if they are there just to show their beauty. The forest trail going up to the temple is full of wildflowers, medicinal herbs, and birds unique to the western Himalayas.
