Introduction about the Figurine, its Location and Inspiration

The mighty, gigantic, world’s tallest statue is the figurine of the greatest Indian leader Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel. This Statue of Unity is a tribute to the Iron Man of India on his 143rd birth anniversary. It depicts India’s first home minister in a traditional dhoti and shawl standing up high with a marching posture with deep gratitude and elegance.

This archaeological marvel, Statue of Unity stands on the river island known as Sadhu Bet, facing the Narmada Dam in the Gujarat state of India. The project of the Sardar Patel Statue of Unity was started on 31st October 2014 and was completed in mid-October 2018. It was inaugurated by Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi on 31st October 2018 in the remembrance of the great leader.

Construction & Comparison with the other Taller Statues over the World

The Statue of Unity is constructed with steel framing, and reinforced cement concrete and has bronze cladding. It took nearly Three thousand workers to complete this project. A renowned company named Larsen and Toubro took the charge of constructing this mighty structure. It cost nearly 3050 crores to complete the structure.

The statue stands upright in the 58-meter-long base and the height of the statue is 182 meters. Thus making the total height of 240 meters including the base. The statue can withstand wind velocity up to 60m/s, vibrations, and earthquakes.

This Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel statue is now the tallest statue in the world, measuring 182meters, leaving behind the Spring Temple Buddha Statue -153m, Ushiku Daibutsu - 120m, Statue of Liberty- 93m, The Motherland Calls- 87m and Christ of Redeemer- 38m; in 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th position respectively.

Tonnes of raw materials were required for its construction. “Statue of Unity Movement” was started, which aimed in collecting irons and mud from the farmers nationwide, as a donation of their used farming instruments, for constructing this statue; as Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel always worked for the betterment and upliftment of the farmers.

Why is it known as the “Statue of Unity”?

After the Independence of India in 1947, it got very difficult to unite all the 562 Indian provinces as one nation, as there was much diversity amongst them. The Father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi, requested Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel to take charge of the home ministry of India and unite the provinces to transform India into one big nation.

Sardar Patel ji, by his intelligence and dedication, united the country once again and thus his statue got its name “The Statue of Unity”.

As the Gold glows in heat… This marvel statue of Sardar Patel too had to face many criticisms while construction on various grounds like finance, wastage of land, political criticism, etc., by various groups of people. But overcoming all those hurdles, it finally made its way to the platform.

The statue of unity stands on the small island at the banks of river Narmada with the alluring view of Satpura and Vindhya mountain ranges at the background.

The statue – The gigantic Statue of Unity is a wonder in itself and is worth seeing. Each leg of the statue has 2 lifts which can carry 26 people to the top in just about 30 seconds.

Viewing gallery – At 135 meter height, inside the statue, is situated the viewing gallery. As the name indicates, it gives a wonderful view of the Sardar Sarover Dam, it’s reservoir and the tall mountain ranges. This gallery has the capacity to accommodate 200 guests at a time.

Valley of flowers – This flower garden is situated in the front of the statue. It is spreaded in 250 acres of land. It has more than 100 varieties of plants. Thus making the view near the statue more pleasing and full of life.

Wall of unity– It is made from the mud collected from the lakhs of the villagers from their farms, across the country.

Selfie point– It is constructed keeping in mind the passion of all the selfie lovers, which gives a good view of the statue and its beautiful surroundings.

Laser light and sound show– this show for the audience, highlights the works of Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel in the unification of India as a nation.

Museum and audio-visual gallery– Dedicated to appreciate the works of Sardar Patel towards his country.

Bridge – it connects the island harboring the statue, to the mainland. It can be bypassed by opting to go by boat.

Ahmedabad to Statue of Unity route is very well maintained and can be reached within 3 hours 45 minutes via Vadodara.
