The Padmanabhaswamy Temple is mentioned in Hindu books (granth), including the Vishnu Purana, Brahma Purana, Matsya Purana, Varaha Purana, Skanda Purana, Padma Purana, Vayu Purana, Bhagavata Purana, and the Mahabharata. The temple is mentioned in epics and Puranas. Srimad Bhagavath says that Balarama visited this temple, bathed in Padmatheertham, and gave many offerings. The temple is one of the 108 holy places of Lord Vishnu, known as Divya Desams. These places are praised in old Tamil songs written in the 7th and 8th centuries.

It is believed that Parasurama cleaned and worshipped the idol of Sree Padmanabhaswamy in Dwapara Yuga. Seven Potti families—Koopakkara Potti, Vanchiyoor Athiyara Potti, Kollur Athiyara Potti, Muttavila Potti, Karuva Potti, Neythasseri Potti, and Sreekaryathu Potti—were charged by Parasurama with "Kshethra karyam" (temple administration). Parasurama instructed King Adithya Vikrama of Vanchi to “Paripalanam,” the protection of the temple.
