Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple of Shimla is one of the most visited temples in Himachal Pradesh. Located on the Kalka–Shimla National Highway, about 6 km from the main city of Shimla, this temple located at an altitude of 1,975 meters above sea level. It is dedicated to Lord Hanuman and is known locally as the temple where devotees come to seek relief from troubles and hardships – the name Sankat Mochan itself means "one who removes difficulties."

The temple is Shimla's second most visited Hanuman temple, after the well-known Jakhu Temple on Jakhu Hill. What makes Sankat Mochan different is its strong association with the saint Neem Karoli Baba, who identified this location as the right place for a Hanuman temple after meditating in the surrounding forest. The temple attracts both religious pilgrims and tourists who stop here on their way to or from Shimla. So if you are travelling to Shimla, make sure to visit this temple once.

Entry to the temple is completely free. Besides Lord Hanuman, the temple complex also houses idols of Rama, Sita, Lakshmana, Lord Shiva, and Lord Ganesha. A small shrine dedicated to Neem Karoli Baba is also located within the complex. On Sundays, a community langar (free meal) is served to all visitors.

The story of Sankat Mochan Temple begins in 1950, when the revered saint Neem Karoli Baba spent 10 to 12 days meditating in the forest near the spot where the temple stands today. During this period, he had a strong spiritual conviction that a Hanuman temple must be built at this location. He shared this vision with his followers.

The actual construction of the temple started in 1962, supported by the then Lieutenant Governor Bajrang Bahadur Singh and other devotees of Neem Karoli Baba. The temple was formally inaugurated on 21 June 1966, a Tuesday, which holds special significance as Tuesdays are traditionally considered the most auspicious day for worshipping Lord Hanuman.

In 1998, a small shrine dedicated to Neem Karoli Baba was built within the temple complex to honor his connection to this holy place.

Hanuman Jayanti (usually in April) and Navratri are especially important festivals at this temple. Ram Navami and Dussehra are also celebrated with special prayers. For daily visits, mornings between 7:00 am and 9:00 am are the quietest times.
