About Rohtang, Manali, Himachal Pradesh

Rohtang Pass is one of the most famous tourist spots in Himachal Pradesh. It is located around 51 km from Manali and connects the Kullu Valley with the Lahaul and Spiti Valley. The pass is covered with snow for most of the year, which makes it a perfect place for nature lovers, adventure seekers, and photographers. You can see stunning views of snow-capped mountains, glaciers, and rivers like Beas and Chenab. The surrounding valleys look very peaceful and fresh, making it a great escape from busy city life.

The Rohtang Pass is open from May to November. It is not particular high or difficult to cross on the feet by Himalayan norms, but it has a well-deserved reputation for being risky because of unpredictable snowstorms. The state government started issuing permits online to limit the vehicles to reduce pollution in this area.

This pass is an old trade route between the people on either side of Pir Panjal. There are many other passes in Lahaul and Spiti that have specific names, like Baralacha La and Kunzum La. The Rohtang Pass separates the Kullu Valley from the Lahaul Valley and is known for its high level of snowfall that closes the pass for more than 5 months in the year and the snowstorms that create many problems in the place.

The name Rohtang means ‘ground of corpses’ or ‘pile of dead bodies’ due to the number of people who lost their lives trying to cross it. The road is absolutely amazing. The two highest points of Geypan are also visible from Rohtang. Currently, no vehicles are allowed to cross this stretch between 8 am to 12 pm daily as the BRO makes this stretch motorable. Due to the military significance of the highway and the need to keep it open the entire year, the Indian government began building the 8.5 km long Atal Tunnel (Rohtang Tunnel) in 2010 to bypass Rohtang Pass to create a much safer and faster year-round link.
