Narayan Sarovar is a Hindu pilgrimage place on the Kori Creek. It is surrounded by stunning landscapes and it offers a perfect blend of natural beauty and religious significance attracting visitors from far and wide. It is situated in the Lakhpat taluka of the Kutch region of Gujarat. The Koteshwar temple is 4 km away towards the north-west.
It has a rich historical significance dating back to ancient times. According to Hindu mythology, this is one of the five sacred lakes (Panch Sarovar) for Hindus, which are Bindu Sarovar in Sidhpur, Mansarovar in Tibet, Narayan Sarovar, Pampa Sarovar in Karnataka and Pushkar Sarovar in Rajasthan created by Lord Vishnu, making it a revered pilgrimage site for devout Hindus. The lake and its surrounding area have witnessed the rise and fall of numerous civilizations, including the Indus Valley Civilization and the Kutchi Kingdom.
The temple complex near the lake is an important attraction for visitors. It includes beautifully crafted shrines dedicated to Lakshmi-Narayan, Adinarayan, Trikamray, Govardhannath and other deities. The architecture reflects old Kutchi craftsmanship with stone carvings, open courtyards and quiet prayer areas. Visitors can also experience daily aarti and traditional rituals performed by local priests.
Close to the lake lies the Narayan Sarovar Wildlife Sanctuary, known for its desert wildlife. The sanctuary has species like chinkara, desert fox, desert cat, jungle cat, porcupine and many migratory birds that visit during winter. The dry grasslands and thorny shrubs create a perfect natural habitat for these animals. It is a good place for nature lovers, wildlife photographers and travelers exploring the unique biodiversity of Kutch.
Tourists can visit this place anytime during the day.
