The building that houses Mahakoshal Art Gallery was constructed in 1875 by Mahant Ghasidas of the Rajnandgaon princely state. It was one of the earliest well-known structures in Raipur and served as an armoury during the British colonial period. After Independence, the Archaeological Survey and state cultural bodies recognised the building's historical value. The Chhattisgarh government eventually converted it into a dedicated art gallery to promote the works of local and tribal artists.
