The other name given to the holy site is Sukrapuri, as Sage Sukracharya offered his prayers to Lord Shiva at this location to recover his eyesight.
The word ‘Kapaleeswarar’ is a combination of two words: Kapalam, meaning head, and Eswarar, meaning Lord Shiva.
The temple is famous for its beautiful design. Visitors enter through a tall decorated tower, called a gopuram. It is about 37 meters high. The gopurams on the east and the west are decorated with lots of beautiful historical images. Lord Shiva is prayed to here along with his wife, Goddess Parvati, who is called Karpagambal in this temple. In front of her statue, you can see a lion image. There is also a statue of the saint Gnanasambandar at the entrance. Other important sights here include the stone artwork of 63 Saivite saints, or the Nayanars.
The temple has a very old holy tree called the Punnai tree, believed to be one of the oldest trees in Chennai. Adding to the beauty of the temple are the idols of Lord Ganesh, seen as Nadana Vinayaka, and Lord Muruga, seen as Singaravelan.
