About Benog Wildlife Sanctuary, Mussorie, Uttarakhand

The Benog Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected area located in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. It covers an area of approximately 339 hectares and is situated near the popular hill station of Mussoorie.

Also known as the Vinog Mountain Quail Sanctuary, Benog Wildlife Sanctuary was established in 1993. It comes under the larger Rajaji National Park system and is located on a beautiful hillside covered with pine trees.

The sanctuary got its name from Benog Hill, the main peak of the area. And here's an interesting fact: the region is named after the rare Himalayan Mountain Quail (also called Pahari Bater), a bird last seen here back in 1876 and now considered at risk of disappearing. Every serious birdwatcher who walks these trails secretly hopes to be the one who spots it again.

Flora & Fauna of Benog Wildlife Sanctuary:

Benog contains an unexpected variety of wildlife. The forests are thick with oak, pine, deodar, rhododendron, and fir trees, along with a number of uncommon healing plants growing naturally in the area.
