The beach resort on the island was started in 1974, and later it became easier for tourists to visit after the Agatti Aerodrome was opened and the number of commercial flights from Kochi went up. The Government of India is also supporting tourism here and is planning to make it an important spot for international travelers.
The few people who stay on the island are mainly those who work at the resort which welcomes visitors. Because of its small size and low population, Bangaram feels almost like a private island.
