History

Ashok Shilalekh in Junagadh, Gujarat. Ashok Shilalekh is more than 2300 years old. These rocks were carved during the time of Emperor Ashoka around 250 BC. After becoming a follower of Buddhism, he spread messages of peace, non-violence, and good moral life across his empire. He carved inscriptions on rocks and pillars in many parts of India. The Junagadh edicts are one such important example.

Significance 

You can find these historic writings in many parts of India—like Girnar in Gujarat, Dhauli in Odisha, Junagadh, and Sanchi in Madhya Pradesh. Each site tells us about Ashoka’s dream of creating a society based on unity and acceptance. They are written in the Pali language in the Brahmi script. In total, there are about 14 historic writings.

Ashoka used these edicts to share his ideas of peace, kindness, and good living with his people. The writings talk about living a life of non-violence, compassion, and respect for all religions. They also avoid animal sacrifices and promote kindness, purity of thought, and moral values.
