It includes grand street parades, traditional folk dances, colourful floats, and cultural performances held in different cities like Panaji and Margao. Shigmo Festival 2026 will take place from 5 March to 18 March 2026 across Goa.

History of Celebrating Shigmo Festival

Shigmo Festival has been celebrated in Goa for many centuries. It is one of the oldest traditional festivals of the state. The festival is linked to the arrival of spring and the harvest season. In earlier times, farmers celebrated Shigmo after the rabi harvest to thank God for a good crop and pray for prosperity.

Shigmo is also connected with Hindu mythology and represents the victory of good over evil. Many performances during the festival show stories from Ramayana, Mahabharata, and other mythological tales. Over the years, Shigmo has grown from a village celebration into a grand cultural festival celebrated across Goa. Today, it is not just a religious event but also a major tourism attraction that showcases Goa’s rich culture and traditions.

Types of Shigmo Celebration

There are mainly two types of Shigmo celebrations in Goa:

Dhakto Shigmo:

Dhakto Shigmo is celebrated mainly in villages and rural areas. Local artists, cultural troupes, and village committees actively participate in creating floats, dance performances, and traditional presentations. This joint effort of government and local communities makes Shigmo Festival one of the most successful cultural festivals in Goa.

Shigmo vs Goa Carnival – What is the Difference?

Many people get confused between Shigmo and Carnival because both festivals are celebrated with parades, music, and colourful performances in Goa. The parade celebrations happen in different cities across the state, but some places are especially convenient for tourists.

Panaji, being the capital and one of the main hubs for Shigmo parades, is one of the best places to stay. Here you will find a wide range of hotels and guest houses for all budgets, and you can easily walk to parade locations or take a short taxi ride.

Margao is another great choice, especially if you want to experience large local celebrations and cultural shows. It has good connectivity, local markets, and comfortable accommodation options. If you prefer to stay close to the beach and enjoy both festival events and seaside views, towns like Calangute, Baga, and Candolim are perfect choices.

For travellers who want a quieter stay, smaller towns like Mapusa and Vasco da Gama offer budget-friendly hotels and easy access to Shigmo parade routes.
