Kovalam Beach in Tamil Nadu, India, recently received the "Blue Flag", an international eco-label, which brings the total number of such beaches in the country to 10. It is also seen as another step in our journey to a clean and green India led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Kovalam: How?

Way back in the 1920s the queen regent of the princely state of Travancore, the present Thiruvananthapuram, decided to set up a resort by the beach at Kovalam, about 15 km away from the city. And once it became functional the king started bringing his European visitors to this place for the official meetings. Word spread. And by the 1970s it was one of the popular joints on the ‘hippie trail.’

On the Kovalam beach

The pristine beach was what attracted many to Kovalam. And still, it holds the charm, despite all the new developments. People throng this beach to frolic with the waves. To get their feet wet, to write their names in the sand and wait for the next wave to wipe it off.

There are two main beaches in Kovalam – the Lighthouse beach, where all the major action is and Eve’s beach – a little away and not very crowded. And unless you mention which, you end up at the Lighthouse beach where most visitors go in Kovalam. There is a lighthouse and a lovely promenade with shops and various eating joints here. And it is here that you will be spoilt for choices about the places you can stay on a budget. If you do not have a prior booking, you can try your luck here. You can experience the water sports on this popular beach of Kovalam and can also go for a long walk around.

The not so crowded Kovalam

The Eve’s beach is close to Lighthouse beach but less commercial and therefore more peaceful.  If you want to hear the sound of waves away from crowd, Eve’s beach can be your best choice in Kovalam. You just need to ask your driver about this beach and he will brings you to this less crowd beach in Kovalam. As this is beach is not that much commercialized, bring water and some food with you.

Reaching Kovalam

Kovalam is about 12kms from the Thiruvananthapuram Central Railway Station. And about 13 kms from the Thiruvananthapuram International Airport. You can easily get local transportation or can hire a taxi to reach Kovalam from Trivendrum airport or railway station. Road condition is very good and can be reached within half an hour if the traffic is normal.

Mode of transport

There are frequent buses that pass through Kovalam. You can hire a taxi or an autorickshaw. Mango cabs are the best option when it comes to cab services.

Best time to visit

Due to sea surroundings, all seasons are quite pleasant as well as alluring at Kovalam but the best time to visit Kovalam would be September to May.
